Mikael Granlund
2016-2017: 1.43 PPG - Tier 2 (81 GP) 2015-2016: 0.99 PPG - Tier 3 (82 GP) 2014-2015: 0.90 PPG - Tier 3 (68 GP) 2013-2014: 1.13 PPG - Tier 2 (63 GP)
The Washington Capitals are pleased to offer Mikael Granlund a 4 year deal worth $29 million, with an AAV of $7.25 million.
Granlund fits in the bottom of the $7.5-$8.5 million range based on his most recent season. He has had 2 previous seasons in a lower production tier (and therefore COULD be in the tier below, which I have done). He also has not shown a statistical real upward trend in production, with the exception of the recent season. However, I think we all can agree he is a player on the rise, so I have aimed to the top of the salary range below his recent season.

This is a tough one because if he had scored .03 less points per game in 13/14 he would be in the bridge category. I think it's a tad low and I'd like to see him jump into the next category and be around 7.75 Mil based on his jump in production. If jumping .5 FP/G isn't considered a clear upward trend, then I don't know what is.
Maybe i'm taking this too far, but you're new to the league and we're all still doing our first round of re-signs. So I would advise at doing a bridge 2 yr deal and you could probably get him closer to 6 Mil per season and if last year turns out to be his peak it won't sting as much.

I'm gonna say approved.
The two lower tiers he's been in were two seasons before this one, therefore I think it's justified to be one range lower. With his most recent season; will either be a one off or is a breakout year, which is why I agree with Colin that a bridge contract would be safer.
But if you're intent on this long term contract and are trusting him to be this good, then approved.

Based off the Rubric and the added effect of his breakout season, he really should be a 7.75m. Its tough to disapprove over 500k but for a 4 year deal with this type of player I try to stick to the guide lines. If he continues growing off his last season he could be a real star in this league. Which is why I have to to disapprove the lower tiered salary.
However it might be wise to consider what Colin has said above. Granlund just came off the biggest contract year in his career so far. He just finished his bridge deal and was definitely motivated to get that big money long term contract. So going with a cheaper shorter deal (1-2 years) might be a safer play. It gives you a chance to see if he lives up to that breakout season before committing big money for 4 years. Thats just my two cents!

How can I go against a GM with the balls to offer that deal. I really hope last season was his new norm not a motivated player needing a payday.

The numbers fit, you are in the guidelinesame. So I approve. Honestly, I think this contract could go either way. It could be a great contract if he keeps going up, but could be a complete bust at the same time.
